Nice education in civil rights. Then again, it's in Kansas (aka the Smart State)

School board members in Sedalia are considering testing its students for drug use.

KMBC's Marcus Moore reported Tuesday that school leaders, parents and teachers admit that child drug use is a problem, but they don't all agree that drug testing is the best way to handle it.

School board member Jim Waldo said the proposal is to randomly test about 40 students a month. The students would be involved in extracurricular activities, such as sports, choir and the ROTC program.

Under the program, students who drive to school would lose the privilege if they failed a drug test, Waldo said.

Opponents say the tests would violate students' privacy.

Board members said they plan to survey students and study results from other school districts that do drug testing.

Moore reported that the cost of each test would be between $20 and $100.
