About 40 people protested in Jakarta yesterday to demand the death sentence for Schapelle Corby.

Carrying signs reading "Corby, drugs dealers, must die" and "Intervention, no! Australia is supplier of drugs", the crowd picketed the Australian embassy, urging the court to reject Corby's appeal against a 20-year jail sentence for importing marijuana.

Leader Beathor Suryadi said the discovery of a white powder in a letter addressed to the Indonesian embassy in Canberra "deeply pains" many Indonesians and was "an insult to our integrity".

The protest came as a new Morgan poll found only 51 per cent of Australians believe Corby is not guilty. An increasing number - 21 per cent - believe she is guilty while 28 per cent remain undecided. Thirty seven per cent said Prime Minister John Howard should wait until after Corby's appeal to ask the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to pardon her, 21 per cent said he should request the pardon now, and 5 per cent couldn't say.

Advertisement"The media would have everyone believe that an overwhelming majority of Australians think Schapelle Corby is innocent, but this poll shows it is only a slight majority of 51 per cent," pollster Gary Morgan said.

Corby's legal team is consulting one of Jakarta's most flamboyant lawyers, Hotman Paris Hutapea, to formulate the appeal.

And yesterday, the airport baggage handlers' union demanded a judicial inquiry into all aspects of airport security.
