Some 3,000 delegates from 150 countries convened in Bangkok today to devise ways to combat drug trafficking, corruption, transnational crime and terrorism.
The eight-day United Nations conference brings together senior government officials, members of the private sector and crime experts.
“Besides the traditional threats to international peace and security, new dangerous threats have emerged on a global scale, threats related to transnational organized crime in its various forms, including drug trafficking, but also to corruption and terrorism,” Thailand’s Justice Minister Suwat Liptapanalop said in the opening speech.
He said it was crucial the international community worked together to ensure threats that were distant did not become imminent, and those that were imminent did not become destructive.
The minister noted that past congresses had affected national policies on treatment of prisoners, the independence of judicial systems and victim protection.
Topics to be discussed at the UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice range from human trafficking to environmental crimes, bribery of government authorities and computer-spawned crimes.
Justice ministers from Australia, China, Finland, Jordan, Malaysia and Monaco are also attending the meeting.
