Velvet Revolver vocalist Scott Weiland says in the April issue of Esquire that his family helped him kick drugs for good, according to the Associated Press. Weiland tells the magazine, "Right now, for the first time in my life, I'm finally happy. I don't think anymore about getting high...the prospect of losing my wife and my children changed everything."

Weiland was arrested several times during the Nineties when he served as frontman for Stone Temple Pilots. He says it took divorce proceedings initiated by his wife and two more arrests in 2003 to sober him up permanently: "It was all of this that got me where I am today. My family is the most beautiful thing in my life beyond anything else, even music. But it took loving them before I could love myself."

The 37-year-old Weiland tells Esquire that he began drinking hard liquor in his early teens, and moved on to cocaine and heroin by the time he was 24. He says that heroin made him "feel safe" and gave him confidence as a musician, although he knew it could one day destroy him.

The singer also says that after being arrested for the first time in 1995, he spent a month in a Los Angeles hotel room with another well-known drug offender, Courtney Love. Weiland says that the pair "shot drugs the whole time. Most of the time she just walked around in panties. There was never anything that went on between us...dope was the most important thing."


Velvet Revolver begins a North American tour on March 19th in Phoenix, Arizona.
