Speaking ahead of the Government's Drugs Bill which will be debated in Parliament today Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said:

"This Bill is not a solution to many of the problems that this Government has itself created over the last 7 years.

"While the Government has had numerous initiatives, summits and crackdowns on drugs, the result is we have more drugs, more dealers, more crime and more violence. The Government has lost the war on drugs.

"We will support the Bill - as it is a very small step in the right direction – but are disappointed it does not reclassify cannabis, mention residential rehabilitation, encourage schools to test pupils, set mandatory sentences for repeat drug dealers, or provide for automatic custodial sentences for those dealing to children.

"It is time for the Government to stop talking and start addressing the realities of this problem which is blighting our playgrounds, streets and communities."
