The number of deaths caused by illegal drug use fell during 2004 to its lowest level since 1989, a survey conducted by the Associated Press showed this week. A total of 1,324 people died as a result of illegal drug use, the survey found. That represented a drop of 10.3 percent from 2003. The federal government's drug commissioner, Marion Caspers-Merk, attributed the decrease to help that German communities are providing to drug addicts.
