1907-1979 15 states USA 15 states in the US began writing eugenics laws in the books to authorize sterilization of the "feebleminded, insane, criminalistic, epileptic, inebriate, diseased, blind, deaf; deformed; and dependent". (the Model Eugenical Sterilization Law) By 1924, approximately 3,000 people had been involuntarily sterilized in America. Many states continued to practice eugenics laws with Virginia halting only in 1979. Over this period as many as 100,000 people has been forcibly sterilized.
