A total of 225,675 persons have been convicted of a felony for drug trafficking, representing 22% of the total numbers of convicted felons this year. Of those convicted 140,346 were sentenced to jail in State prisons, and 20,716 jailed in federal prisons. Average jail terms in State prisons are almost 3 years; in federal prisons they are a little over 7 years. About 226 were sentenced to life.
