A total of 118,231 persons nation-wide have been convicted of felony for drug possession by the government of United States, which amounts 12% of the total numbers of convicted felons in year 2000. Of those convicted 74,432 were sentenced to jail in State prisons, and 1719 jailed in Federal prisons. Average jail terms in State prisons are just over 1 & ½ years; in federal prisons, it's almost 7 years. About 790 people were sentenced to life for drug possession.
