Approximately 1.7 million people, or 21% of the populations, most of them communists oppositions, Vietnamese and Chinese nationals, Muslims, and Buddhist monks were eliminated from the population by expulsion, execution, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge communist regime lead by Pol Pot.
